Former Mayor Glenn Van Leer Passes Away

It is with a heavy heart that the City of Union reports the passing of Glenn Van Leer, former long-time mayor of Union.  Glenn Van Leer passed away Friday, November 17, 2017 at the age of 84. 

Van Leer served the City of Union as Aldermen for 8 years (1977-1985) and as Mayor for 22 years (1985-2007).  Van Leer served on the Industrial Development Authority and Union Development Corporation.  In addition to his public service, Van Leer was a business owner, civic leader, member of several community organizations, faithful church member, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

Glenn married Dixie Schaefferkoetter in 1954.  They were married for 62 years and had three daughters and 5 grandchildren.  Dixie passed in February of 2017. 

Glenn Van Leer exemplified what a public servant should be.  When receiving the Chamber’s Distinguished Service Award, Glenn commented, “I raised my family in this community because I wanted to…I gave of my time because I wanted to.  I love this community almost as much as I love my family.” 

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Van Leer family and our sincere gratitude for sharing Glenn with us for so many years.  He will be missed.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 21 at 10:00am.

Burial in Zion Church Cemetery in Union, MO.
Visitation for 84 year old Glenn Van Leer 
Will be held from 3-8pm on Monday,
At the Oltmann Funeral Home in Union, MO.
He is survived by three daughters: Pam Klenke and husband Hank of Beaufort, MO;
Cindy Groenke and husband Dale of Beaufort, MO
Marcie Van Leer of Union, MO;
One brother, Marvin “Beef” Van Leer and wife Virginia of Beaufort, MO;
One sister Helen Olm of Toronto, KS.
grandchildren: Laura and Aaron Borgmann, Megan and Nathan Isgriggs,
Jenna and Matt Galbreath, Ross and Faith Groenke, Chase and Ava Borgmann,
Lincoln Isgriggs, Halle Galabreath.
Two sisters-in-law: Linda Metcalf and husband Jim, Kay Nuenberger and husband Chuck.
Memorials may be given to American Legion Post 297 or
Developmental Services of Franklin County.
